![]() ![]() ![]() It’s said the Holmes stories celebrate rationality and are anti-gothic gothics, but it doesn’t take much to see that logical processes of ratiocination are thrown into question by a deeper irrationality. Sherlock Holmes tales begin with the impact of a crime and then put together fragments to make a coherent whole to explain the past the reconstructive act takes into account the notes, blank spaces, dreams and texts found. I propose tonight to write about the form, history and nature of Sherlock Holmes tales, and then talk of these two tales of marital violence and torment.įirst, the form: There is a basic pattern of detective fiction (mysteries): you restate and restructure a past event in the present in order to understand it. In my Exploring the Gothic classes, we’ve read and discussed two of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, and we’ve watched the 1984 “Adventure of Abbey Grange” (1986 BBC The Return of Sherlock Holmes) and “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box” (1994 BBC The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes).
